Prototyping expectations
For designers in DWP.
Expectations at associate level
- be able to sketch ideas. for example, working at a whiteboard with other designers or members of your team
- be able to use a range of tools (sketch, powerpoint, word, draw.io, etc) to create prototypes and choose the right tool based on what’s being tested
- refer to the DWP design patterns and contribute where possible
- take a component first approach by using existing, standard components and patterns from the DWP and gov.uk design systems
- be able to write basic html and css, with training if necessary
- understand how to install, edit and run the gov.uk prototype kit
- be able to use basic version control commands. to push, pull and merge changes in a prototype, with support
- use heroku and github to publish prototypes securely, with support
Expectations at working level
- regularly hold collaborative design workshops
- be able to create more complex prototypes, when necessary
- contribute to the DWP design patterns and DWP design system
- have a high skill level using the gov.uk prototype kit and the associated software. be able to offer basic advice on its use
- create provoke-a-types or designs that might be knowingly incomplete. use these to create discussion and drive out better solutions
Expectations at senior level
- identify and share best practice for productivity
- encourage sharing among teams
